⛰ Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
The north’s most important temple, on a mountain above Chiang Mai: a golden stupa, bells and a view over the whole city. A 306-step staircase with dragon railings leads up, and there is a funicular for the lazy.
Price: Foreigners about 30 ฿, funicular about 20 ฿
Insider tip: Red songthaews to the temple leave from the zoo next to Chiang Mai University — agree on a return fare. Come by 7–8 am, while mist still fills the valley and the crowds haven’t arrived. Cover shoulders and knees.

🛕 Old City & Wat Chedi Luang
A square old town behind a moat and brick walls, packed with temples. The highlight is Wat Chedi Luang, a huge half-ruined 15th-century stupa split by an earthquake in 1545.
Price: Wat Chedi Luang about 50 ฿
Insider tip: During the day the temple runs a “monk chat”: monks are happy to talk to visitors in English — ask them about monastery life. The Old City is easy to explore on foot or by rented bicycle.

🛍 Sunday Walking Street
Every Sunday evening the Old City’s main street from Tha Phae Gate is closed to traffic and turns into a kilometre-long market: northern village crafts, street food in temple courtyards, musicians and foot massages right on the pavement.
Price: Free entry
Insider tip: Runs roughly 16:00–23:00; come early, because by 8 pm the crowd moves as one solid stream. Don’t miss khao soi, the northern curry noodle soup. On Saturdays there is a similar market on Wualai Road.
