Five caves in the rock painted from floor to ceiling and more than 150 Buddha statues. The temple is over 2,000 years old and is a UNESCO site. It is 20 km from Sigiriya, so the two fit into one day.
Price: About 2,000 LKR; shoe storage costs a small fee
Insider tip: Go at 7–8 am or after 4 pm: the climb over bare rock is very hot at midday. Cover shoulders and knees. The ticket office is at the car park on the far side of the hill, not by the golden Buddha.

A viewpoint at the edge of the tea estates near Haputale, where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his land. On a clear morning you can see for dozens of kilometres, all the way to the south coast.
Price: A small fee at the estate entrance
Insider tip: Be at the top before 9 am: after that clouds roll in. The road up is 7 km of switchbacks through tea, by tuk-tuk from Haputale or on foot. On the way down, stop at the Dambatenne tea factory.

Sunrise with a view of Sigiriya: five times cheaper and without the crowds.
